Petalists Livelihood Program

Launched in 2016, Petalists is Craftizen Foundation’s flagship initiative and India’s largest craft-based vocational training program for adults with intellectual disabilities.

The name Petalists was inspired by adults with intellectual disabilities using their skills to transform discarded temple flowers into new products. Just as they give every bloom a second life, the program creates new opportunities for their abilities to be recognised, strengthened and celebrated.

The Challenge

Adults with intellectual disabilities have diverse strengths and abilities but vocational opportunities are not always designed to recognise and build on them.

Training may not be adapted to different cognitive and motor abilities and even when skills are developed, clear pathways to production, markets and income can be difficult to access.

Many organisations working with adults with intellectual disabilities also need the right training, products, systems and market connections to build strong, sustainable vocational programs.

Our Approach

Petalists starts with ability.

Rather than treating adults with intellectual disabilities as beneficiaries of an engagement program, Petalist builds ability-led vocational pathways.

Craft processes are broken down and adapted to different cognitive and motor abilities, allowing individuals to participate according to their strengths while creating products that meet real market requirements.

Craftizen works through partner organisations, strengthening their capacity to build and grow their own vocational ecosystems.

Through training, product and design development, production systems, quality, pricing, branding and market access, we help partners build stronger pathways from skills to production and meaningful income-generating opportunities.

What makes us
unique?

How it began

Petalists began by bringing two challenges together: limited vocational opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities and the growing volume of discarded temple flowers. We adapted simple craft processes to different abilities, enabling participants to transform flowers into Holi colours, incense sticks and other products.

The work was tactile, engaging and gave participants the satisfaction of seeing what they had created. What began with discarded flowers soon grew into a wider craft-based livelihood program, shaped around individual abilities and the possibility of meaningful work.

The Petalists Model

We work with partner organisations to build their capacity across vocational training, production, enterprise and markets, so that opportunities can continue to grow locally.

This approach is supported by Craftizen's proprietary 4C Framework - Capability, Craft, Creation and Connection - which helps each organisation understand where it is today and what it needs to strengthen over time.

Capability

Can the unit run itself?

Craft

Is the product good enough?

Creation

Can they produce at scale?

Connection

Can they reach a market?

Madala’s Story

His journey reflects how recognising individual abilities and providing meaningful opportunities can foster confidence, independence and a greater sense of belonging.

Madala joined our partner centre in 2014 after being referred by the Kakinada Government Hospital. At first, he found it difficult to engage in activities and communicate with others. Over time, with a supportive environment and consistent encouragement, he began to build confidence and participate more actively.

In July 2024, Madala became part of the Petalists Livelihood Program, where he discovered a natural aptitude for flower depetalling. The work quickly became a source of purpose and pride. Today, he attends the centre with enthusiasm, earns a regular income and has developed new skills, including identifying colours and distinguishing different flower varieties.

National Petalists Day

Celebrated every year on 19 January, National Petalists Day is an annual celebration of ability, work and participation across the Petalists network. It brings together adults with intellectual disabilities, families, trainers and partner organisations across India to recognise their work, creativity and achievements.

Through events, performances, workshops, exhibitions and stories from across the network, National Petalists Day creates a shared platform to celebrate abilities, strengthen connections and bring the growing Petalists community together.
